A staggering 133,000 tonnes of bananas have been exported from the country since the beginning of this year, according to the banana Association of Cameroon (Assobacam).
The bulk of these exports is the result of plantations du Haut Penja (PHP), who were responsible for 55 518 tonnes exported up to 30 June 2013. The Cameroon subsidiary of fruit firm Marseille, operates approximately 3,000 hectares of banana plantations in the Mungo department , in the Littoral region, and claims about 45% cent of national production.
The Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC), the only public company in banana production and in partnership with the American Del Monte, is so far the second largest exporter with 43,599 tonnes of bananas exported to the end of June 2014.
According to Assobacam’ statistics, larger exports took place in May 2014 totalling 27,448 tonnes exported, against only 14 000 tonnes for the month of June, the less prolific in terms of banana exports .
