African swine fever hits far north

The services of the regional delegation of the breeding of fisheries and animal Industries have announced the outbreak of African swine fever in Danay Mayo and Mayo Kani in the far North.

Resultantly, piglets in the affected departments have been weaned due to African swine fever which has become rampant in the region.

Indeed, on October 08, 2014, the Governor of the region of the far North, Midjiyawa Bakari, had signed an order temporarily suspending the movement and marketing of pigs in the region of the far North.

According to the regional delegate of livestock, fisheries and animal industries, Dr. Kidmo Mbraougue, the levies were made on suspected cases by the national veterinary laboratory (Lanavet) based in Garoua for analysis. The positive results after the test influenced the decision to destroy all animals infected within a radius of 5 km from the contaminated areas.

To avoid the plight of 2010, authorities are forced to slaughter all pigs in the northernmost region, livestock services have recommended steps to the players in the sector to combat the outbreak.

This is to avoid spreading the disease via transit of pigs across the region and prevent the selling of this commodity.

Hence, infected animals must be slaughtered and buried in deep pits. The strict adherence to these measures can greatly reduce the spread of the disease.
