Peter William Mandio, CPDM Member of Parliament for Mbam and Inoubou, has urged President Biya to renationalize the production and distribution of electricity in the country.

In a letter to the Managing Director of the current electricity provider, ENEO otherwise known as Energy of Cameroon, the Member of Parliament accuses the company of incompetence. He states that the recurrent power cuts have pushed him into suspecting that the company is linked to underground forces trying to oblige Cameroonians to take to the streets.

Mandio, points out in the letter dated March 6 that he was prompted to write to the company’s boss, after he and the city dwellers in the country’s economic capital spent 72 hours without electricity. It was also noted in the letter that the company did not provide any justification for the blackout.

“Depriving Cameroonians from electricity in a recurrent manner exposes them to unhealthy living, insecurity…Cameroonians have lost their human dignity and pride to electricity cuts. Most definitely, the social and economic losses incurred are countless” the letter read in part.

He also, reechoed the cries of Cameroonians who complain that they often lack electricity in their localities due to broken transformers or fallen electricity poles, but still witness rising electric bills.

Pointing out that it is because of these shortcomings on the part of the company that he is urging the head of state to terminate the company’s contract and nationalize electricity in the country.

The Member of Parliament promised ENEO’s managing director that the issue will be brought up during the March session of parliament which comes up on March 10.

The management of the electricity corporation is yet to make a statement on the issue.
