Cameroon takes possession of WACS landing station

The government of Cameroon has officially taken possession of the West African System Cable (WACS) landing station at Limbe.

The handover agreement was signed by ICT minister Jean Pierre Biyi Bi Essam and MTN Cameroon CEO Karl Toriola as part of a private-public partnership. The connection to the global internet will bring innovative services, better quality and lower cost services.

The landing station, valued at over XAF 2 billion, will be run by Cameroon Telecommunications, which has already signed a capacity leasing agreement with MTN Cameroon.

It was the governments XAF 12 billion contribution to WACS which gave it a right to purchase the landing station for the 5.2 Tbps cable.

Cameroon currently gets 354 Gbps of internet capacity from the 12-year old SAT-3 satellite. The minister said Camtel will have to guarantee all operators wholesale broadband access at reasonable prices.
