According to statistics' from the national technical Committee for the balance of payments, the imports of rice on the territory, in 2013, culminated to about 819 800 tons, which represents expenditure estimated at a little more than 212 billion francs CFA.
Throughout the previous year, 552, 500 tonnes of rice had been imported, for an amount of 156,6 billion francs CFA according to the same source. What corresponds, with a considerable rise of more than 200,000 tonnes on the imports of this cereal abundantly consumed by the people.
As a reminder, national rice consumption in Cameroon is estimated at approximately 300,000 tons, for a production which reaches 100,000 tonnes with difficulty and is mainly ensured by the Company for the expansion and modernization of rice growing at Yagoua (SEMRY).
Moreover, the imports, in addition to making up the deficit of production at the national level, also allow a better provisioning of the sun-regional market.
