Even though still under 10 million subscribers, the customer base of MTN Cameroon, leader in the mobile telephone market, increased slightly (+3.1%) in the first quarter of 2016, going from 9.2 million clients at year end 2015, to 9.5 million users at the end of March 2016.
In its 2016 first quarter activity report which has just been published, the South African telecoms group ascribes the performance of its Cameroonian branch "to the improvement in the quality of its 3G network and the launch of 4G at the end of 2015". On analysis, the rollout of these two technologies enabled MTN Cameroon to substantially improve its revenues in data services.
Indeed, we learn, these revenues increased by 78.9% at the end of March 2016, against 67.5% at year end 2015. Thanks to this progression that the company justifies by the dynamism of its mobile money service, which now has 2.1 million customers (an increase of 7.5% at the end of March); data revenues now represent 18.5% of MTN Cameroon total turnover, against 13.7% in September 2015.
