Launching of MTN 4G LTE network Launching of MTN 4G LTE network

MTN Cameroon, leader of the telecommunications sector in Cameroon announces the extension of its 4G LTE network to the cities of Bafoussam in the West Region, Limbe and Kumba in the South West Region of the country.

The extension of the operator’s next generation 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology to these localities barely two months after the seaside tourist town of Kribi in the South Region, and seven months after its initial launch in December 2015, confirms MTN’s commitment to provide Cameroonians with the tools needed to access the new digital world.

MTN Cameroon has invested over FCFA 60 billion in less than one year to develop its 4G LTE network in Cameroon. This considerable investment enables MTN to cover about 53% of the population of Cameroon with its 4G LTE network. Other regions of the country shall also be progressively covered by this modern technology.

“At MTN, we are conscious that the telecommunications sector is today a sustainable development catalyst in Cameroon and we intend to contribute significantly in this regard. It is for this reason that we launched the first 4G LTE network in Cameroon in December 2015.

Today, 8 major cities are covered by this technology. Before the end of July 2016, our customers in the cities of Ngaoundere and Garoua will also benefit from high-speed connectivity offered by MTN’s 4G LTE network.

We are proud to be a major driver of this digital transformation through the provision of infrastructure like the WACS optical fibre landing station, 4G technology, as well as innovative products and services which are revolutionising the way Cameroonians work and live.

This, while enhancing the competitiveness of local businesses and unlocking the potential of the country as a digital hub in the Central African sub-region”, declares MTN Cameroon CEO, Philisiwe SIBIYA.

As a reminder, MTN obtained from the Government in Cameroon the renewal of its licence in March 2015 with the right to exploit 3G and 4G technologies. Thanks to MTN, Cameroon has become one of the few countries in the world to deploy 3G and 4G LTE technologies within the same year.
