Mekin dam to produce 500 tonnes of fish per year

Hydro Mekin, the public company responsible for managing the Mekin dam, under construction in the South region of Cameroon, and the Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Industries, signed on August 30, 2014, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a industrial fishing development project around the energy infrastructure construction.

Indeed, we learn that the achievement of this hydroelectric project is expected to define a fishing area extended over approximately 8,000 hectares, where 11 varieties of eatable fish were identified by experts from the Ministry of Fisheries for a potential estimate of 500 tonnes per year.

Big consumer of seafood, Cameroon unfortunately only produces about 176,000 tonnes of fish every year, but exports about 200,000 tonnes per year to cover the shortfall.

These exports cost 120 billion CFA francs officially per year.
