An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court yesterday ordered the remand of a certain Cameroonian nanny, Christine Amosson, who allegedly attempted to steal a baby in her care.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Simon Imhonwa told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 4 around 12:30 pm at her employer’s residence in Gbagada.
Imhonwa said the accused who is facing a two-count charge of attempt to commit felony and child stealing, was employed by a couple to take care of their six months old child while at work.
“On January 4 after her employer had left for work, the accused strapped the baby on her back; she packed all her belongings into a ‘Ghana-Must-Go bag’, and attempted to flee with the child.
“She was apprehended by a neighbour who alerted the child’s parents and later handed her over to the police,’’ Imhonwa said, noting that the offence contravened Sections 21 and 275 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
The presiding Magistrate, Bola Osunsanmi, asked an interpreter to interpret the charge to the accused.
Osunsanmi ordered that the accused remain behind bars until the next date of sitting, being February 10.
