A gang specialised in the theft of vehicles has been neutralised in Yaounde.The gang of 11 was caught with 13 vehicles during a vast operation carrried out by the Yaounde Territorial Gendarmerie to dismantle the network of car thiefs.
The suspects and the stolen vehicles were presented to the public by Lieutenant Colonel Essomba Ondigui Joel Desire, Commander of the Territorial Gendarmerie Group of Yaounde. He said the operation is still ongoing and other suspects will be arrested and sent to court.
The operation that began on June 12, 2016,was prompted by the declaration of a driver who allegedly sold his boss' vehicle and claimed that it was stolen. During investigations, Gendarmerie officers uncovered a network specialised in the theft of vehicles in front of supermarkets, drinking spots and other public places.
One of the stolen vehicles had been reduced to spare parts. Officers indicated Toyota type vehicles were the majority stolen by the gang.
The vehicles where recovered in the neighborhoods of Ngousso, Eleveur, Ebogo 1- Soa and Briquetrie.
The Group Commander however noted that the gang operated in almost all neighborhoods of Yaounde.
He urged the population to share intelligence information and collaborate with the forces of Law and Order in order to bring bandits out of hiding.
