Dare to be different - Ciana

Like some of you, I discovered Ciana a few days ago through the teaser of her first clip “Ozeile Nchiango” a two-word sentence in Bangwa language which I heard means “You know I am better than you” and clearly tells me there’s some rough female action coming our way.

But the fact that the snippet looks pretty good is not what captivated me. I realised I had seen Ciana before! I had seen her looking all sweet and girly, smiling shyly to the camera in her cute white dress which is why I had such a hard time believing she is the girl with an attitude, sensually gyrating her hips in the video.

The contrasting personalities puzzled me, I was dying to know more and I am sure you were too. So Creative And Moving readers, it is my pleasure to introduce to you Ciana…

Q: Who is Ciana and what motivated her decision to become a rapper?

A: CIANA aka Caroline Jabe Takon is a 23 year old woman from Douala but born in Nigeria to Cameroonian-Nigerian parents. I am currently studying Geology with a Petroleum engineering focus at the University of Buea. My decision to become a rapper was driven by my passion for music and the fact that I very much identified myself with rap and its milieu.

Q: As an artist, how would you want to be perceived? What’s the overall message you want to convey through your music?

A: Through my music, I would like to portray my diverse personalities, the traits that make me unique and thus make my music unique, saying to the world that it is okay to be different. I would like to show the world that a woman is capable of doing and achieving great things and at the same time, manage to keep her femininity. I would like to be perceived as one of the best. Quality is the headstone of all I do.

Q: What are the challenges you are facing now and what keeps you focused?

A: My biggest challenge is being underestimated and being judged by my appearance. I may be soft and girly as Caroline, but make no mistake, as CIANA I am capable of “roughing it up” – I am an artiste!

Q: What can the fans expect in the upcoming weeks?

A: In the upcoming weeks, we are promoting the teaser in anticipation of the actual official video that was shot by Adah Akenji in Yaoundé. I will be doing some media rounds and working on my profile with my team.

Q: What do you think about Cameroon’s actual musical landscape? Is there any male/ female Cameroonian artist you would like to collaborate with?

A: I believe we are on the right track now as the majority of artistes within the scene have succeeded in creating an identifiable style that is now unique to Cameroon. The next step is to fish out those talents so the music scene can buzz even more. Finally, the Cameroonian public should be pushing hard to consume our homemade product to “keep the buzz buzzing”.

There are many artistes I would love to collaborate with and the list is quite long *laughs* However Dareal, Killamel and Stanley Enow are some of them.”
