The future of video on YouTube across Africa

In the very close future, video broadcasting will be the most ubiquitous and accessible form of communication. The tools for video recording will continue to become smaller and more affordable. Personal media devices will be universal and interconnected. People will have the opportunity to record and share video with a small group of friends or everyone around the world.

Today,100 hundred of new video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. This will continue to grow exponentially as more of our people get access to the internet. Our goal is to allow every person on the planet to participate by making the upload process as simple as placing a phone call.

This new video content will be available on any screen – in your your living room or in your pocket. And YouTube will bring together all the diverse media which matters to you, from videos of family and friends to news, music, sports, cooking and more.

In just about 8yrs of years of existence, YouTube has united hundreds of millions of people who create, share, and watch video online. In the nearest future, users will be at the center of their video experience, you will have more access to more information, and the world will be a smaller place. So, here are the 10 most popular dance inspiring songs and videos from across Africa.

Davido – “Skelewu” Davido’s “Skelewu” remains one of the most popular dance styles in Africa. The successes of the instructional and competition videos made this one of the top viewed African songs on YouTube in late 2013 and to date.

DBanj – “Oliver twist” A call to viewers to submit own versions of the video made this one of the early adopters of the fan-video competition trend in 2011/12. “Oliver Twist” scaled the African charts in 2011 and was a top 10 hit in the UK singles chart in 2012 reaching #2 on the UK R&B chart

P-Square – “Alingo” P-square’s Alingo song has some of the most intense dance tutorials on YouTube. including workout versions amongst others

Iyanya – “she can get it”, “away”, “kukere”, “your waist” From kukere to your waist to away, Iyanya is one artist that has shown that dance videos can help to drive fan engagements. Hit song kukere got tons of copycat videos on YouTube, while his $10,000 competition for the track “she can get it” spawned a lot of videos with quite a few on YouTube.

JJC Skillz – “African skank” JJC Skillz released “African skank” a song about different dance moves from across the continent with ugc as tutorials MC Galaxy – “sekem”

New release by Nigerian Artist MC Galaxy with a competition along the same lines as the other artists and a growing number of fan videos Lil Kesh / Orezi- Shoki

Lil Kesh is the newly signed YBNL artiste with the brand new buzzing track titled, “Shoki.” which features his YBNL crew, Olamide, Ehis, and Partoranking. This hot track has inspired many others videos such as Orezi – Shoki [Instructional Dance Video] Azonto.

This is still one of the African videos/songs with the highest amount of fan-created videos to date. It even had animated versions of tutorials and a brand commercial version.

Fuse ODG (Collab with Wyclef Jean) – “Antenna”: Ghana’s Fuse ran a dance competition on YouTube to find the best video for his song; Antenna. The winning submissions appeared in the official music video featuring Wyclef Jean. Estimated aggregated total for videos tagged with the dance competition on YouTube was around 25M.
