HIAMS fetes 10 anniversary of impacting Cameroon’s healthcare system

The Higher Institute of Applied Medical Studies, HIAMS Buea, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.

According to the President and Founder of the institution, Michael Boyo, the institution was celebrating 10 years of impacting Cameroon’s healthcare system.

In a press conference that was organised as part of the 10th-anniversary celebration, Boyo boasted that the products of the institution are not only inundating the various hospitals in Cameroon but are being scrambled for in the market with over six already working at the Cardiac Centre in Shishong.

The 10th-anniversary celebration of the institution culminated in a dual ceremony, (the matriculation of 129students and the graduation of 71students that constituted the 10 batch of the institution.

Opening the dual ceremony Boyo exhorted the students to be cautious and keep promoting the views and the ideals of the institution, namely: respect, duty-cautiousness, excellence and hard work.

He narrated the history of the institution, saying, the new students who decided to choose HIAMS as their place to study should always remain Ambassadors of the institute.

In an academic discourse titled, “Knowledge with Skills,” Prof EnohTanjong, challenged the students not to limit themselves to acquiring knowledge, but to strive to transform their knowledge into skills.

“Cameroonians are very intelligent, but at times, our knowledge is not matched by skills.That is why we keep lagging behind.We must match knowledge with wisdom if we must succeed,” he stated.

While appreciating thePresident and Founder of the institute, ProfTanjong added; “Boyo broke the myth that nursing is only for science students and showed us that even art students with a passion for nursing can pursue their dreams of becoming nurses.”

HIAMS has been existing for more than a decade now and prides its laureates who serve both the state as nurses, lab technicians, ultra-sonographers, lab scientists and lecturers.

The Director of the institute, Dr.Gwendoline Toh Boyo, highlighted its successes which, among others, include one of the best students in the Higher National Diploma, HND, exams.

“This year is a special one because we had three students with first class passes and one of our students emerging third best in the HND in the whole country.

The overall best graduating student, Glory Nyenti Etchi,with a gross point average, GPA, of 3.86, expressed joy “I always see myself succeeding, not that I am special, but because I put in just a little more effort and I challenge freshmen and women to make use of their time at HIAMS to achieve their dreams in life and be forceful in order to succeed.”

The event was crowned by award of prizes to best students in all the departments in the institution by the alumni of the citadel of learning.
