Shisong Cardiac Centre Carries Out 256 Open-Heart Surgeries

The figure is over a period of three years since the hospital entered into cooperation with Italy-based Milan Cuore Fratello and Bambini Cardiopaticinel MondoNation.

Cameroon has been counting the blessings of the Shisong Cardiac Centre since its inception to handle the nation's cardiovascular health problems. In effect, November 17, 2012 offered a rare opportunity to check and balance 10 years of what has become Cameroon's cardiac centre of hope. The venue was Shisong, Kumbo, Bui Division and it was all about 10 years of cooperation between the Shisong Cardiac Centre and Milan's Cuore Fratello and Bambini Cardiopaticinel Mondo that inspire hope for the sick.

It was a rare moment to cheer landmarks of the Shisong Cardiac Centre in barely three years of effective operations with statistics that speak. The General Manager, Sr Jethro Nkenglefac took time off to tell the awe- inspiring crowd that filed out for the event that since 2009, the Shisong Cardiac Centre team has consulted 15.770 patients, admitted 3,312, featured 256 open-heart surgeries, 162 catheterisations and emerged with 35 pacemaker implantations.

The event welcomed the blessings of the Ministry of Public Health with the Technical Adviser No 2, saluting the "huge and demanding humanitarian work carried out by the Shisong Cardiac Centre" and committed to work towards a performance contract to better empower the centre.

Alessandro Giamberti, the President of Supervisory Board of Cardiac Centre Associazione Bambini Cardiopaticionel Mondo, travelled from Milan with a conclusive message that the 100 operations performed per year so far at the Shisong Cardiac Centre is their "flap of butterfly's wings" that was able to save the lives of over 300 people. To hear him "The best is yet to come for the Shisong Cardiac Centre".

Away from that, the Superior of the Tertiary Sisters of St. Francis, Sr. Euphrasia Yuh, said the event equally celebrated a relationship of commitment, sharing, perseverance and prayers. She greeted the government for support to sustain and enhance collaboration especially with the exemption from customs duties and taxes for all imported medical and surgical materials and consumables. Sr. Euphrasia Yuh further appealed for the government to help make things happen by facilitating a structural collaboration with the Cardiac Centre and sponsoring surgical interventions. The Cardiology unit of the Centre was launched in 2002, the foundation stone was laid in 2004 ahead of its inauguration in 2009. The Centre continues to cry in the rain for a good access way.
