Cameroon professional League One club, Bamboutos of Mbouda, are bereaved after their top goal scorer, Steve Mengandang died in a ghastly motor accident on his way to Mbouda for a training session.
Mengandang died while he was in a taxi that took him back to Mbouda from Bafoussam, the capital of the Western Region.
"The car in which he sat was crushed by a truck of a road construction company, very famous in the construction of roads," said a witness who did not want to reveal the name of the company in question.
Mengandang, a midfielder with Bamboutos of Mbouda, has been with the club for just seven months after playing with another West region side, Feutcheu FC.
With four goals to his tally in 20 games, he was the top scorer in Mangwa Boys.
"It's a big loss, regrets Gérard Mbimi, Coach of Bamboutos FC. We risked losing two players in this accident which would have made it more than seven deaths. The taxi Steve boarded had only one instead. He preferred to move fast leaving his teammate, Roger Dandjo. Here's how Dandjo was lucky. "
Before Bamboutos of Mbouda and Feutcheu FC, Steve Mengandang, 25, had also defended the colors of University Ngaoundé FC and Unisport of Haut-Nkam.
Because of this death, Bamboutos Mbouda asked the Cameroon Professional League of Football to postpone their day 23 match scheduled for Sunday, June 8, 2014 in Mbouda against the League leaders Unisport of Haut-Nkam.
