Bakundu Chiefs in the Southwest region have appealed to the government to reclassify them as it has done to other chiefdoms in the country.
The appeal was made by the president of the Bakundu chiefs’ conference Hon. Motasse Ngoh David. He was speaking during the general assembly of the Bakundu chiefs’ conference that held in Kumba on Thursday 5th March 2015.
The meeting which was also attended by notables and elite of the Bakundu clan was aimed to discuss the issue of Boko-Haram, land issues and especially development.
In his address, Hon Motasse observed that the General Assembly of the Bakundu chiefs is an annual ritual set aside to discuss pertinent issues affecting the lives of the Bakundu people.
He saluted the massive presence of Bakundu elite and chiefs and prayed that the resolutions adopted will be implemented to the benefit of the people.
He chastised some Bakundu elite who have been sowing seeds of discord within the tribe, noting that leadership roles come from the people and not taken by force.
Chief Motasse further noted that chiefdoms are ruled by their chiefs who; the chiefs are advised by the council of elders set up by the community. He then went on to appeal to the government to reclassify Bakundu chiefs as it has done to other chiefdoms in the country.
However, the issue of the paramount chief of the Bakundus was shelved. It should be noted that following the death of HRM Tata Okie Henry Namata Elangwe, no other chief has been designated as the paramount chief of the Bakundu people.
But The Median learnt that serious lobbying is going on underground by some chiefs who are seriously postulating for the covetous position.
