As Governors from Cameroon’s 10 regions conclude their first semester meeting for this year today, September 18, 2014, in Yaounde, they have also been giving situation reports on the implementation of major infrastructure projects in their areas. This is especially so as President Paul Biya’s ‘Great Accomplishments’ agenda aims at attaining emergence status for the country by 2035.
Challenges With South Roads According to the Governor of South Region, Jules Marcellin Ndjaga, the first phase of the Kribi Deep Seaport has reached over 95 per cent, while work on the Mekin and Memve’ele dams is going on well.
On the other hand, the Kribi Gas-fired Project is now complete and supplying power. Governor Ndjaga however noted that there was a problem with the Mengang-Sangmelima Road which has been halted while the one from Sangmelima to Ouessou in Congo Brazzaville is well behind schedule.
“The reasons are many – problems of organisation and mobilisation of work by the construction company, machinery breaking down too often and payments made late to the construction companies. All this has led to delays in carrying out work, but we hope that the relevant authorities, who have already been informed, will do something about it,” explained the South Region chief executive.
Bafoussam Stadium Ready In 2015 On his part, Governor Awa Fonka Augustine of West Region says the construction of the Bafoussam Municipal Stadium is 45 per cent implemented. “The Chinese company carrying out the construction is very serious about its task. They hope that by the end of the year, the main structure would have been completed and what will be left in 2015 will be the finishing touches,” Governor Awa explained.
Other Projects Of Promise Elsewhere in the country, Governor Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua of the East Region says work on the Lom Pangar Hydro-electric Dam is 54 per cent complete, with the people looking forward to the construction of a rail line from Mballam to the Kribi Deep Seaport for exporting iron ore.
“Work on the Ndop-Kumbo stretch of the Ring Road is ongoing while that between Bamenda and Mamfe towards Ekok on the Nigerian border is nearing completion. Also, work on the Santa-Bali Road is underway,” Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique of the North West Region assured.
According to Governor Bernard Okalia Bilaï of the South West Region, he has made it a point of duty to always remind relevant ministries of the need for work on the Kumba-Mamfe Road to begin. He pointed out that the aim was to ensure that the people begin enjoying the dividends of the project as soon as possible.
