The campus police have been ordered to get the kits of crooks who deceive the vigilance of the new students. "It took me 5,000 F in a cyber cafe not far from the main entrance of the campus, during my pre-registration online. It is only today that I learn that I only had to take a login ticket and register myself on the site of the university", stressed Fatima Abega, young bachelor.
He had to pay not less than 15,000 F instead of 10,000 F, at his pre-registration. On the other hand, Martial Tedjo, another young bachelor, has also been ripped off by one of these lobbyists meetings at the University of Yaounde I.
"He told me that he is an elderly academic student who help the new students and that the 5,000 F was charges for paying into the account of the university," he recalled.
These crooks, find themselves in the campus and in the surrounding area, taking advantage of the naivety of the new students to make money. They have laptop computers and benefit from the free wifi connection within the campus, an advantage that allows them to be mobile and hardly discernible by those can expel them.
Yves Michel Ekongo Olengue, deputy coordinator of pre-registrations at the Faculty of Arts, Letters and Sciences (a COMPACTFLASH Card), deplores this type of scam within the university. "This is unfortunate! We have received several complaints from students to which some unscrupulous individuals, present within the campus, have extorted under the guise that it was the cost of pre-registration online".
10 000 F, is the amount that must be paid up in normal time to pre-register in the University of Yaounde I. For the academic year 2014-2015, this amount is paid into the account of the university, either directly to the United Bank of Africa (UBA), either to Express Union or even via MTN Mobile Money. "The online registration is free.
The student can just pay for the Internet connection, i.e. between 200 F and 500 F ", says Marcel Micha, manager of an online preregistration point recognized within the campus. Nevertheless, at the Faculty of Science, the office of the students has established points of preregistration where students do not disburse 200 F, an operation which costs only about 50 F with MTN Mobile Money.
To steer the way to these crooks, the administration of the university has already taken steps. "We have been able to identify and denounce some of these crooks to the academic authorities. The rector instructed the campus police to get their kits. For the moment we don't know yet of the result of the case. ", says Yves Michel Ekongo Olengue.
In the meantime, the academic authorities call for vigilance of "cop's" of Ngoa-Ekelle on this, the eve of academic year.
