Ajax Amsterdam have given up on signing former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o, reported De Telegraaf on Wednesday evening.
After making the Cameroon international a solid offer last week, the Dutch giants were expecting an answer by Sunday before giving an ultimatum to the player’s representatives.
August 20 at 6 pm was the deadline set by the club, which then decided to move on and close the door on Eto’o as Ajax’s football director, Marc Overmars informed the Cameroonian’s agent that the deal was off.
“He is his right to take his time to choose a club, but it took too long for Ajax,” a club’s spokesman said.
“Considering the long time spent in talks in Paris, it looked like Samuel was interested. But apparently, it must be the same with other clubs,” he added.
Ajax will now focus on a plan B, with Eto’o remaining linked with several Premier League outfits.
