Cameroon request Ebola-free venue

Cameroon Football Federation’s Normalisation Committee’s President Joseph Owona asked CAF to relocate their Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2015 Group D qualifier against DR Congo on Wednesday, reported The Associated Press.

The game is scheduled on September 6 in Lubumbashi.

The request follows the Ebola virus outbreak in DR Congo that has already claimed the lives of 13 people.

“We are now waiting for their reaction and I'll also want to add that we're working with authorities in charge of Ebola prevention in Cameroon for instructions on how to proceed,” Owona told AP.

Cameroon are not the first country to express their serious concerns with respect to the deadly disease, as the Confederation of African Football has received a similar request from Congo who are set to face Nigeria in Calabar, and is also facing problems with Côte d’Ivoire whose government is reluctant to let the team of Sierra Leone in the country for their campaign Group D opener against the Elephants.

CAF has already instructed the relocation of two games scheduled in Ebola-hit Guinea and Sierra Leone and doesn’t appear inclined to force many more changes.

However, the national governments will have the final say in the matter, and the continental governing body of football will have to either give its support or disqualify the teams the ones after the others.
