The Germany Women U17s will be up against Venezuela, Cameroon and Canada in Group B at the World Cup in Jordan (30th September to 21st October 2016).

The draw took place in the late afternoon on Monday from the Al-Hussein Cultural Centre in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

Proceedings will get under way against Venezuela on 30th September in Irbid for head coach Anouschka Bernhard’s side, followed by Canada in Amman on 3rd October and Cameroon in Al Zarqa on 7th October.

“We are really looking forward to this tournament”, said Bernhard. “With just 16 nations present, there are no weak teams. We expect to face real quality there. All of the teams are really strong and play good football.”

Germany qualified for the tournament in Jordan two weeks ago, after their victory at the European Championship in Belarus.

The Germany squad are playing Venezuela in their opening match – a team who lost 4-1 in the semi-finals of the 2014 competition to eventual champions Japan.

The U17s played Canada in the group stages of that tournament and ended up missing out on progression to the quarter-finals, where the Canadians were defeated 3-2 by Venezuela. Cameroon were unsuccessful in their qualifying campaign for the World Cup two years ago.

“The group is very interesting and is full of very contrasting and difficult opposition”, says the Germany coach. “We expect very different mentalities and varying styles of play, for which we will have to prepare our tactics very well. Every group is full of quality, so we can’t complain.”

Irrespective of the outcome of the tournament, Bernhard expects that the World Cup “will be a huge challenge for our young players and an important step in their development.”
