Debutant Cameroonian striker Lionel Asu’s 83rd minute goal earned Be Forward Wanderers a hard-fought 1-0 win over Surestream FC at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday afternoon.
Asu came in for Jimmy Zakazaka at half time to curl in the winner which took Wanderers to fourth on the table with seven points from three games at par with fourth-placed Big Bullets, who drew 1-1 with Kamuzu Barracks at Dedza Stadium on the same day.
Wanderers and Bullets also share similar points to leaders Red Lions and second-placed Blue Eagles who drew 1-1 on Friday in Lilongwe.
Wanderers coach Elia Kananji had dropped Richard Chipuwa, Francis Mlimbika, Malumbo Gondwe and Luka Milanzi from the starting line up while featuring Peter Munthali, Ted Sumani, Jacob Ngwira and Jabulani Linje respectively in a 3-5-2 formation.
Having lost two straight matches, Surestream technical director Peter Mponda, who also doubles as a coach, restored Ernest Tambe in midfield and the rookies had matters under control as half time ended goalless.
Then Asu arrived on the pitch while being eventually followed by Kondwani Kumwenda and Mulimbika for Zakazaka, Cuthbert Sinetre and Isaac Kaliyati respectively.
In one of Wanderers; attacks, striker Muhamad Sulumba flicked the ball onto the channels for Asu who, from range, curled the ball to the far right corner to spark wild celebrations for the Nomads. In another game, rookies Mzuni claimed their first win after beating Epac 1-0.
