Viang Bengono wins Yaounde Open

He beat Nguepi Dimitri by four sets to zero in the final to lift the trophy in the men's senior category.

The first table tennis open tournament of the season took place on Saturday, May 16th at the gymnasium of the Higher Institute of Youth and Sports in Yaounde, with Viang Bengono emerging champion.

The several times Cameroon champion, beat Nguepi Dimitri who just returned from the African championship in Cairo-Egypt by four straight sets to zero in the final. However, the results do not reflect the physiognomy of the game as it was a tight race at every set with Viang narrowly edging his opponent; 11-9, 11-8, 11-8 and 11-9.

However, the real revelation of the tournament were two youngsters from the North region, Ahmed and Mohamed who qualified in the finals in two categories; cadet and junior with Mohamed taking the upper hand in both finals on an identical 3-1 score.

Over 60 athletes took part in the competition in eleven categories namely; Benjamin, minim, cadet, junior, senior and veteran in the both the men and women's series. Trophies and cash prizes were awarded to winners in each category.

The tournament also saw the president of the federation, Alfred Bagueka Assobo; distribute table tennis equipment to athletes and some promoters of the game from the West region.

The equipment comprising over one thousand balls, rolling nets, rackets tables and tennis shoes were acquired with the assistance of Sarah Hanffou who runs an NGO known as 'Ping Sans frontiere' Alfred Bagueka also disclosed that the federation will be putting some equipment at the disposal of FENASU for the organization of the upcoming University Games.

He also announced the holding of upcoming events such as the African championship to be hosted by Cameroon, the Chinese Ambassador's cup, SONARA international and the Top 12 competition.
