AFCON 2019: Paul Biya expected in Qatar to sign agreement

Unless last minute changes, the Cameroonian head of state should make an official visit to Qatar next week.

Paul Biya is in discussions with the gulf nation for projects to build sports facilities in the country. It should for this purpose, we learn, to sign important agreements in connection with preparations for the African (Can) Cup of Nations in 2019, the organization has been delegated to Cameroon.

"The issues are very advanced and should not experience obstacles as to their finalization with the Qatari part," said a senior official of the Presidency of the Republic. With that country, says the same source, conditionalities around the site appeared particularly advantageous: they have huge funds and the expertise required in this area. This is Qatar, with huge infrastructure which is legendary, which will host the World Cup football in 2022.

Indeed, weary of hope for positive results of the National Programme of development of sports infrastructure (Pndis) engaged with China, Paul Biya seems determined to take the bull by the horns.

After an audience granted on 8 October to the President of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) and Vice President of FIFA, Issa Hayatou, Paul Biya had been told that his country would do all he can to not disappoint the hopes placed in him by the continent.

"Everything will be done on time and properly, so that all Cameroonians continue to be proud of their country despite the delay accumulated in this field", he told his guest.

Issa Hayatou, sources say, promised Biya to add his weight so that negotiations with Qatar will experience a successful outcome. The president of CAF is maneuvering for his country to host a memorable AFCON; one of the most beautiful and best organized since 1957.
