The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has approved the Bafoussam Omnisport Stadium in the west region of Cameroon for the hosting of the African Nations Cup.

The validation comes two weeks after CAF Expert, Malian Souleymane Magassouba was in Cameroon to inspect the stadium and sat through its inauguration.

Cameroon won the bid to host the 2019 AFCON presenting the Bafoussam Omnisport Stadium as one among the other stadium to the used for the competition.

This is the second stadium CAF has approved after the Limbe Omnisport stadium where Bafana Bafana and the Lions separated on a 2-2 tie in the nations cup qualifier match.

Prior approval of the Bafoussam Omnisport Stadium, Cameroon Sports, and Physical Education Minister, Bidoung Mkpatt has reiterated government’s readiness to complete outstanding work of the stadium such as the access road and parking lots.

“Whatever the eventual remarks and reservations pronounced, be assured that government would provide efficient and satisfactory solutions in real time for the validation of the stadium in line with engagements taken to honorably host the 2016 African Women Championship and the 2019 African Nations Cup”, the Sports Minister said.

Constructed by the China Machinery and Engineering Company, the stadium has a natural turf, an athletics pitch, tribunes, conference and VIP rooms, With 69 lamps, additional 13 on standby on four pools at the four corners of the stadium and generators on standby, nocturnal games can be played.

The stadium was inaugurated with two exhibition games, Cameroon U-17 women’s national team against a local selection and U-20 national team that featured former Cameroon international Geremi Sorel Njitap in the second half against another local selection.

“I wish during my days we had this type of stadium, I am so overwhelmed I had to lace my boots for the game and for the fact that the stadium is constructed in my village”, Njitap said.

Cameroon’s Infrastructural development programme is underway with the construction of other modern stadia of international standards ahead of the 2019 nation’s cup.
