This opportunity was given to Cameroon as a result of the good performance of the country during the last continental tournament in Algeria.
From 8th to 12th October, Cameroon took part in the 8th African power lifting Championship, organized in Béjaïa, Algeria.
It was the first participation of Cameroon in the said competition. 111 athletes from seven countries (Morocco, Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Libya, South Africa, Algeria) took part in the tournament.
According to Calvin Yaho, president of the Cameroonian power lifting Federation, the Cameroonian delegation had four athletes, and two gold medals were won.
"It is a satisfactory result, especially as only three athletes were able to compete, while the others could not for health reasons", says Calvin Yaho. A performance that enables Cameroon to stand behind Algeria and Libya for medal classification.
Beyond the sporting performance, according to Calvin Yaho, Cameroon was placed by the International Federation of powerlifting at the top of the short list of countries that could host the next championship of Africa in 2015.
"Cameroon is in front, followed by Morocco. Envoys will be on-site at the beginning of the year to see if all the conditions are met for this. I think that we have the infrastructure to do so.
The organizing country will be finally announced in February and the competition held in October 2015,"says our source.
