Cameroon comes up with tactical trump card

Cameroon coach Hugo Broos Cameroon coach Hugo Broos

Cameroon coach Hugo Broos sought to nullify the pace of South Africa and came up trumps with a surprise selection on Tuesday as the Indomitable Lions held Bafana Bafana to a goalless draw in Durban and edged closer to qualification.

“If you saw the game on Saturday, it was not a good performance on our side, so we had to change things. We had big problems with the speed of South Africa. So we changed a little bit on tactical level too, we put some other players in the team and the performance was much better,” he said after the two back-to-back Group M qualifiers that both ended in draws.

“We were much sharper in attack than we were in Limbe but our last pass was the only thing that was not good. Should that have been good, we would have had more chances than we had.”

Broos, in only his second match in charge, said there was a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction after Tuesday's draw, which keeps Cameroon on top of the group standings with two rounds to play. The Indomitable Lions have eight points, one ahead of Mauritania on seven.

“We are in a strong position and we have also laid a good base for work ahead. There were lots of negative points after the last game but after this one, lots of positives.
