Cameroon lifts African draught championship trophy

The third edition of the African draught championship took place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire from July 25th to August 3rd with Cameroon emerging champion.

Team Cameroon made up of world vice champion, Jean Marc Ndjofang, Leopold Kouogueu and Mbongo Thomy Lucien beat the Senegalese team in the final, 4-2 to win the trophy that was coveted by seven other countries; Guinea, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Mauritania, and host Côte d’Ivoire.

Senegal came second winning the silver medal while the host country Côte d’Ivoire came third.

Cameroon had an easy walk over the tournament given that they beat Senegal in the first round, 4-2, pulled a 3-3 draw against Mali in their second outing. They beat Niger on an identical 4-2 score and pulled another 3-3 draw against Côte d’Ivoire before walloping Burkina Faso 5-1 in the 5th outing in the tournament.

The draught Lions played another 3-3 draw with Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea to qualify for the semi finals. In the semi finals, Cameroon this time outsmarted Côte d’Ivoire 4-2 to qualify for the final while Senegal equally edged Côte d’Ivoire 4-2 in the play off to gain place in the final.

The competition was to take place from July 25th to August 14th but was reduced to August third due to budgetary constraints.
