The ascension of Tonnerre into the MTN Elite One football championship has revived nostalgic feelings of confrontations among the trio.
The ascension of Tonnerre Yaounde to the Elite One championship has once more revived the age-old rivalry which used to reign among Canon, Tonnerre and Union. Past confrontation among the trio were hotly contested on and off the pitch of play, thereby raising public interest in the championship. All three clubs have a strong poplar base and were the major contenders for the championship title before the coming of the new kid on block or the colossus from the North region, Coton Sport who have dominated the domestic league in the past decade.
The rivalry between Tonnerre and Canon stems from the fact that TKC was created by dissidents from the Canon who referred to themselves as the 'Beti Intelligentsia' and looked low on their neighbours from Nkoldongo. This animosity was always reflected on the field of play each time both teams confronted each other as they tried to settle scores through football, thereby giving spectators who thronged the stadiums in their numbers, a spectacle worth their money.
Union on her part acted as a counter weight to the hegemony of the teams from Yaounde, giving them a run for their money each time they met. It is this sporting rivalry that spectators and supporters of the clubs are expecting upon resumption of the Elite One championship next year. All three clubs are back in good shape after having been in the limbo for a long time and football pundits are expecting any of the three clubs to clinch a continental title which has eluded Cameroon for too long.
