Resurrected after 25 years in the cold, Dzekwa FC of Jakiri pulled a sensational victory over Tubah United on Thursday, November 5, 2015, in the last of the four quarter-final matches.

They cruised along with a 2-0 scoreline to book a semi-final berth against favourite PWD Bamenda on Sunday.

It was not only the scoreline but the manner of the victory that caught the close to 2000 spectators in Bamenda by surprise. Dzekwa FC engaged Tubah United with sustained pressure, attacking with fast pace at the wings, forcing their opponents to maintain a high line up field in an attempt to counter the runs.

This was evident with 17 offside fouls committed by Dzekwa FC, but their sustained energy soon paid off after the break as Tubah United defenders soon began to feel the weight of Dzekwa FC’s unrelenting attacks.

At the 57th minute, Sherila Rene profited from a ball poorly handled by Achondi Samuel from a cross to slam it into the back of the net for the opener. Four minutes later, winger Veranso N, slaloming passed 3 players to send Kongnyuy Fonyuy through to beat the keeper for the second goal.

Dzekwa still continued to threaten and it needed some desperate defending and excellent goalkeeping by Tubah United to keep the score line at 2-0.

Agong Norbert, coach for Tubah United, blamed the defeat on internal wrangling amongst officials of the team. This was confirmed by earlier reports that some of the players were angry about the inclusion of some mercenaries by some team officials, splitting the players and officials into camps.

“This is far above our expectation” an overwhelmed Kongnyuy Salamatu, team manager of Dzekwa FC, who also doubles as Sub Delegate for Sports and Physical Education for Jakiri, said.

The team’s target this year was to participate and learn after a 25-year absence, but saw the opportunity for a knock-out spot and took advantage.

“We are in the semis beyond all expectation and will intend to give PWD Bamenda a run for the money."

Earlier on, Grassland FC of Nkwen was eliminated after a post-match penalty kicks by 4-2 by Tatecam FC. Both teams had played to a barren game and could not be separated after 120 minutes of play.

The semis come up on Sunday with Dzekwa FC to challenge PWD as from 1 pm and as from 3 pm, Tatecam FC of Bamenda and Bang Bullets of Nkambe will lock horns for a place in the final.

The winners of the final will be crowned champion and will represent the Northwest in the national round robin tournament known as the Interpools which will bring together all the regional champions from the 10 regions to compete for three spots into the national Elite Two Championship.
