Hugo Broos wants Song, Matip return

Cameroon head coach Hugo Broos Cameroon head coach Hugo Broos

Hugo Broos feels Cameroon gave a better account of themselves against South Africa last night, while he hopes to convince Alex Song and Joel Matip to be available for their next AFCON qualifier.

The countries played to a goalless stalemate in Durban, having drawn 2-2 in the first leg in Limbe on the weekend.

Cameroon will resume their bid for a spot at Gabon 2017 with a top-of-the-table Group M clash against Mauritania in two months.

"The performance today was much better and we had chances like we didn't have last week in Limbe," said Broos of his first two games in charge of the west Africans since replacing the sacked Volker Finke.

"We played good football, only the last pass every time was not good. And if that was good we should have had more chances.

"But having said that, we had a good game today and the next focus now is the next game against Mauritania. Today everything went well and I was satisfied with this game but the first game was not easy, but the team played very well."

Meanwhile, Broos revealed he is working on getting Song and Matip to return to the Indomitable Lions. West Ham midfielder Song has not played for his country since getting sent off against Croatia at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Defender Matip, who will join Liverpool at the end of the season from Schalke, could be a little harder to bring back to the international fold, according to Broos.

"I've spoken to Song and he told me that it was too early to come again to play for Cameroon since he had difficulties after the World Cup in Brazil," Broos said.

"But he promised me that next game he will be available so I hope he keeps his promises and we see him in two months' time against Mauritania. Every coach likes to have good players.

"On Matip, it will be little bit more difficult and also with him I had a meeting but now that his brother is here (Marvin)... I have put in a little pressure on him. I hope he can convince him to come to be with us for the next game."
