Nkembe Rony Retains Billiard Cup

Nkembe Rony once more proved his invincibility in billiard by clinching the cup title for the fourth consecutive time. He beat challenger, Amouzou Arnaud 5-1 in the cup final on Sunday to conserve the title he has won ever since its inception. The final was played on nine frames but since Rony who emerged vice champion during the African billiard championship in South Africa, won five straight frames. The game ended at six frames given that Arnaud could no longer win even if he won the three remaining frames.

Prior to the final was an exhibition match between two ladies; Ngo Balogo and Ngodi Elisabeth. The match ended 2-0 in favour of the Elisabeth. There was the conspicuous absence of the Minister of Sports and Physical Education or his representative though the latter had given his word to honour the rendezvous. After long hours of wait, organisers had to go ahead with the event without any official from the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, causing the event to begin late in the night.

Trophies were awarded to winners of the National 8 ball competition while diplomas were awarded to monitors and referees trained within the season. The cup final comes to close a season during which the billiard federation organised several competitions such as Yafe billiard competition, National 8 ball competition as well as a national championship. Effort was also made to extend billiard to other regions such as littoral, West and South West Regions. The president of the federation, Didier Mveng Evina, says his ambition is to take billiard to all the ten regions of Cameroon, get homologated tables for Cameroonians to practise of the game and make a name on the continental scene.
