No renewal for Finke

Cameroon coach Volker Finke is on his way out of the team as his contract ending May 24 will not be renewed, according to the football federation (Fecafoot).

The German manager, who came on board in May 2013, is widely contested by the local media and supporters, following the Indomitable Lions’ failure to progress from the group stage of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nation in Equatorial Guinea.

Finke however still enjoys support from part of the team, mostly the players, some officials of the Fecafoot and the country’s presidency. Cameroon kit sponsor Puma, which pays Finke’s €28,000 monthly salary, has also reiterated its support for the coach.

However, the Ministry of Sports, which now has the sole prerogative to recruit national coaches, has decided to move on from the 67-year-old trainer, contacting some top names in Europe for the post, ahead of the 2017 Afcon qualifiers.

Former France coach Raymond Domenech is topping a provisional list of potential candidates, composed mainly of French managers, including Frederic Antonetti, former Benin coach Manuel Amoros and Michel Dussuyer, who recently parted ways with Guinea.

Cameroon will play a friendly match against Burkina Faso on June 6 in Paris, before facing Mauritania in Afcon qualifier on June 12.
