The Fampou David Dagobert Municipal Stadium at Kassalafam in New Bell, Douala, was filled to capacity on Saturday, September 5, 2015.
The mammoth crowd of football lovers that turned up to watch the finals of the 8th edition of the Jean Stéphane Biatcha Peace Tournament, kept New Bell in joy and excitement through repeated cheers and kudos to the talented young players from Douala II Subdivision.
The finalists consisted of youths from New Town Aéroport 1, 2,3,4,5, Youpwé, Quartier Bafia, and Bonadouma, as Team A, and Bonadoumbé, Bonapriso, Babylon, Ngangué, New Bell Bandjoun, New Bell Cimetière, New Bell MbamEwondo as Team B.
The encounter ended in two-round penalty shootouts, with Team B outplaying Team A 6-5. The teams had separated at a one-all draw at the end of the match before proceeding to penalty shootouts. The first goal came from Team B in the 15th minute; then in a frenzied response, Team A boys equalised in the second half of the encounter.
While handing over the cup to the Captain of Team B, Jean Stéphane Biatcha, the Executive Secretary of African Synergy Against AIDS and Suffering, flanked by Mayor and barrister-at-law, Denise Fampou of Douala II Council, reminded the population of New Bell to continue to maintain a culture of peace and serenity.
Shortly before Mayor Denise Fampou’s kick-off, competition organisers sensitised youths and the public to continue to ensure peace and respect of republican values. They were urged to shun street demonstrations, promote a sense of belonging and the need to work towards a brighter future.
The Jean Stéphane Biatcha Peace Tournament is an annual event that rallies youths from Douala II around a common goal - that of promoting a culture of peace, social cohesion and mutual understanding.
