Union Tops MTN Elite One League

Thanks to another consecutive victory on the 18th day of play over the week end, Union Douala has gone solo at the top of the classification chart with 36 points, five points clear from their closest rival, Coton Sport on 31 points.

Union grabbed the three points put to play with style as they thrashed their arch enemies Sable of Batie 3-0 at the Reunification stadium in Douala on Sunday as the team received a standing ovation from spectators after the encounter. It is worth mentioning that Union has been moving from strength to strength ever since young Frank Happi was elected president, a prowess that caused him to be signaled out for praise by fans of the mythical club from the economic capital.

Meanwhile, Yong Sport lost steam after three successive victories, bowing to Renaissance of Ngoumou at the Mfandena sports complex in Yaounde 0-1. The defeat caused them to drop from the runner-up position to the 4th on the league table. The defending champions, Coton Sport on the other hand seem to be regaining steam as they walloped their fellow brothers from Bé in the North region, Scorpion; 3-0, thereby propelling the colossus from the north from the 5th to the second position. Panthere's 1-1 draw against visiting Astres of Douala enabled them to conserve the 3rd position and put them back in the contention for places in continental competitions next year; and New Stars obtained draws to conserves the 3rd and 4th positions respectively.

At the bottom of the table, renaissance's victory over Yong sports enabled them to hop out of the relegation zone, moving from the 12th to the 9th position. Tiko united also moved out of the red zone after playing a one-all draw against Canon of Yaounde at the Municipal stadium in Tiko on Sunday. Sable of Batie and Aigle of the Menoua Division are languishing in the red zone with 17 points with Sable taking the ascendancy on goal difference. Scorpion of Bé remains the point distributor of the championship suffering an umpteenth defeat to maintain the last position on 9 points in 18 outings.
