Yaounde II Celebrates Varsity Games Winners

Medals were presented to management in a colorful ceremony in Soa on Friday June 8.

A special ceremony to reward winners of medals at the 2012 University Games in Buea took place last Friday June 8. Organised by the University of Yaounde II at Soa on the outskirts of Yaounde, the event brought together top officials of sister institutions and guests.

Speaking during the occasion, the Rector of the University of Yaounde II, Prof. Jean Tabi Manga congratulated the students for their performance during the games. He called on them to work harder in order to lift the flag of the institution higher in the next University Games. During the 2012 University Games hosted by the University of Buea, the University of Yaounde II finished second in the overall classification with 45 medals- 12 gold, 10 silver and 23 bronze, won the best medal in athlete (men), best handball player (men) best basketball player (men) best volleyball player (ladies) and the best football player (ladies).

Edwige Angounougou Sanama, winner of four medals (two gold and two bronze) said her secret was hard work. "My objective before the going to the games was to win and I attained my objective," she said happily. The captain of the men's basketball team, Bertine Bihina said his team was able to make it through hard work. He explained that the team has new players this year and so much training was needed to ensure team spirit.
