Yusufa Kalimou retains bui horse race trophy

Yusufa Kalimou, aged 11 years, for the second time running, recently won the Bui Horse Race organised in the Kumbo Municipal Stadium, in Bui Division of the North West Region, from January 2-3, 2016. He got a cash prize of 150,000 FCFA, a trophy, carton of laundry soap and a gold medal. The second and third prizes of 100,000 FCFA and 70,000 FCFA respectively went to Zakariou Kalimou and Sule.

The race was jointly organised by Tadu Dairy Cooperative Society, the main sponsor, the six councils of Bui Division, Ardos (Mbororo community leaders) and people of goodwill from the West, Centre and Littoral Regions. According to the Coordinator of the Bui Horse Race, Yaouba Ibrahim, the event that used to cost at least Three million FCFA, this year cost less than Two million FCFA because of financial challenges. He said in spite of this, everything went well. He thanked all those who donated resources and sacrificed time under the banner of the Rural Development Foundation, which is a leading charity for the development of the Mbororo community in the North West Region.

The Senior Divisional Officer for Bui, Nzeki Theophile, who oversaw the race, said what is important in competitions is participation and not necessarily winning. While commending the founders of horse races in Bui Division, the SDO expressed hope that Tadu Dairy Cooperative Society will look for partners to develop the Bui Horse Race. The Mayor of Kumbo, Njong Donatus Fonyuy, thanked the organisers of the horse race for shifting the date to suit the visit of La Crosse City Council delegation from the US.

He congratulated all the horse riders from the six council areas. The Coordinator of Tadu Dairy Cooperative Society, Shang Lawrence Bayena, the main sponsor, was present. Apart from a horse fantasia that animated the occasion, the horse race was accompanied by a football match, acrobatic displays and Mbororo dancing.
